My mockup for a Sweet Home remake Capcom have been killing it with RE, so it'd be awesome to see them take on the RPG angle that Sweet Home had. : gaming

The cast is made up of the lovable oaf director, Kazuo, with not so hidden feelings for his lovely producer, Akiko, who helps him take care of his teenage daughter, Emi. The rest of the crew are mostly canon fodder for the evil spirits lurking within the walls. The film works exceptionally well at allowing time for the audience to bond with our core trio without ever feeling like the pace is dragging. Sweet Home‘s atmosphere is enhanced as much by its story telling as it is by its graphics and music, which are among the best for the Famicom. The individual visuals are really not anything that you wouldn’t see in a bazillion horror movies, but the 8-bit sprite art greatly benefits their presentation.

After the five characters move into the small room at the entrance of the mansion, the door slams shut and a ghost appears – it begins threatening you and then disappears. At this point, you’re given control of the five characters to find a way out of the mansion. Regardless of your opinions of the genre, horror movies can be a bit difficult to relate to or care about.

The Story Behind the Mansion

The crew doesn’t have any weapons in their inventory and are locked in by the evil spirit of Lady Mamiya, making them especially vulnerable. One of the best horror games ever developed came out for the Famicom in 1989 from Capcom. It was a rare, licensed game that was somehow better than its source material.

Something akin to The ABCs of Death understands the assignment better, putting a $5,000 cap on filmmakers who are assigned a letter of the alphabet — then are challenged to film a standout death scene. Segments are held to agreed-upon ceilings, and their gimmick sustains with a plethora of interpretations from “L is for Libido” to “Q is for Quack,” made by filmmakers blazing a trail on the indie horror scene . Anyone can cobble together a horror anthology — but not everyone should. Cabinet of Curiosities promotes horror filmmakers hand-picked by del Toro as voices seen but not heard enough. David Prior, hot off the heels of the coldly released The Empty Man. Panos Cosmatos, a blistering visionary who’s probably been many a studio executive’s nightmares.

Influence on Resident Evil

Replacements could be found for the various special tools, but that took up another slot in the item inventory, essentially amounting to three lost slots. It’s fascinating how item management quickly becomes intertwined with a vested interested in keeping each of the characters alive. The film's plot is pretty ripe to base a game upon, and will certainly feel familiar to anyone who has played a Resident Evil game.

Kiyoshi Kurosawa‘s most recent film,Before We Vanish, was released here in the states only a few days ago and has been garnering rave reviews. Of course, a positive reception is something the 62-year-old director should be accustomed to by now. Many horror fans regard 2001’sPulseas a bonafide J-horror classic. In fact, there’s one film on his resume that he’d prefer you forgot, and quite frankly – most have.

Sweet Home – The Video Game

The game received a lot of praise from critics, and it is considered not only one of the best Japanese RPG games but also one of the best games released on the Famicom/NES. Once the shit does hit the fan, the story falls into your standard haunted house groove. Someone gets possessed by the long-suffering spirit of Mamiya’s wife, mournful of the son who died too young in a tragic accident, and a dark force seeks to claim the lives of those trapped inside. The story is much less important than the stylish, colorful set-pieces and effects that begin to unfurl scene after scene. Despite the goofy tone of the first half, things get decidedly grim as the film charges towards the climax. Sweet Home is remarkably impressive for its era, and among the best RPGs for the Famicom.

The intimate nature of the setting is adds significantly the terror of both titles. Did You Know Gaming covers video game facts, easter eggs, secrets, censorship, glitches and history for many of gaming’s biggest companies and franchises. In retrospect, Sweet Home is considered one of the most influential games on the Famicom and is generally viewed as having created the Survival Horror genre. Sweet Home would become the basis of the Resident Evil franchise as the original Resident Evil was initially conceived by Tokuro Fujiwara as a remake of Sweet Home. The initial vision of a remake evolved to become its own game, serving as the main inspiration behind Resident Evil. Critics believe the game's gruesome imagery dissuaded Nintendo's branches in the Western world from localizing the game.

Gameplay

Both games take place in an eerie mansion full of horrifying ghouls and clever puzzles. Sweet Home and Resident Evil also use door animations for loading screens when players enter new rooms. Even the unique character items in Sweet Home can be seen in the original Resident Evil game. Chris Redfield has the lighter, Jill Valentine controls the lockpick and Rebecca Chambers acts as a medic. While all this could be coincidental, there are far too many similarities between the two Capcom games to ignore. Players must navigate the complex layout of the mansion while battling with the enemies and keeping the characters in the party alive with the limited weapons and health restorative items available.

Cundieff, Dougherty, and Spindell emphasize momentum throughout a flowing story that divides into chapters yet feels wholly intact. Horror anthologies can’t just be tossed-together hopefuls of leftover shorts from film festivals or filmmaker collectives who think horror anthologies are the quick answer to fame. In a fairly genius marketing move, the film was released in tandem with a Famicom video game of the same name. In fact, the film and the movie were advertised together as well, which caused confusion as to exactly which came first. It seems the film was the chicken before the game’s egg…or the other way around.

In retrospect, Sweet Home is considered one of the greatest horror games ever made and a landmark in the evolution of horror game design. It is often cited for laying the groundwork for the survival horror genre. Allistair Pinsof of Destructoid believed Sweet Home to be the single best Famicom game and dubbed it "one of the very best games ever made". Peter Tieryas of Kotaku wrote that Sweet Home successfully fused the RPG, adventure, and horror genres into a "macabre" in a way most other games rarely have. Marty Silva of 1UP.com wrote that this mixture of genres was a precursor to Parasite Eve .

Deathcember utilizes the “advent calendar” approach by dragging for over two hours as producers exhibit zero conscience for consistency, regarding no desire to hold filmmakers to similar, meshing standards. Holiday Hell feels like a student film tangle of shorts that unevenly duplicate holiday representation or, in some cases, don’t even feel like holiday horror? Shoehorned because they take place during winter snowfall and stick a few Oriental Trading Company decorations on walls?

Like Sweet Home Fanmade Remake?

His first project with the company was a side-scrolling shooter called Vulgus in 1984, but it was in 1985 that he would truly hit his stride as the director of Ghosts ‘n Goblins. From there, he would go on to develop yet another arcade classic for Capcom, serving as the director for Commando and its kind-of-but not-really sequel Bionic Commando. In 1988, he would go on to direct the sequel to his first major success, Ghouls ‘n Ghosts. It was pretty obvious at this point that Fujiwara was a very productive member of Capcom’s arcade division, and he enjoyed his time there as well. Resident Evil revolutionized horror games, but it couldn't have done so without the foundation built by a small licensed title for the Famicom.
